2010 Accidents
Sadly, there were three bicycle/motor vehicle collisions in 2010 within the City of Spokane, which resulted in fatalities to bicyclists, and 1 pedestrian fatality. The previous year of 2009, there were no bicyclist deaths, and an alarming eight pedestrian deaths. In contrast, during the previous five years (2004- 2008), there was only one bicyclist fatality, and nine pedestrian fatalities. Obviously, the last two years have been severe in Spokane. Let’s all strive for zero fatalities in 2011!
Some may think more bicyclists will result in more accidents and deaths. National statistics don’t collectively support that conclusion. From 1998 to 2009 our nation’s total bicyclist fatalities have been fairly consistent, ranging from 629 to 786 annually, with 630 in 2009. Correspondingly, the last nine years of that period (2001-2009) the national bicycling mode share has increased steadily from .8% in 2001 to 1% in 2009.
